Install and organize Claude Skills safely in a few practical steps for Claude Code and Claude Desktop.
Before you install Claude Skills
Before you learn how to install Claude Skills, confirm where your skills directory lives. Every skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file plus any supporting examples or templates the creator included.
Download the skill folder from a trusted marketplace, then scan the SKILL.md for any permissions or external calls it references. A quick security check before installation prevents surprises later.
How to install Claude Skills in Claude Code
In Claude Code, place the skill folder inside your project or global skills directory. Claude Code auto-discovers SKILL.md files, so once the folder is in place the skill is available immediately.
Invoke the skill by name in your next conversation. Claude reads the instructions and applies the workflow to your task, complete with the context and quality checks the creator encoded.
How to install Claude Skills in Claude Desktop
For Claude Desktop, drop the skill folder into the desktop skills directory listed in your settings. Restart the app if prompted, then call the skill by name in a new chat.
Desktop skills work the same way as in Claude Code — the difference is only where the folder lives on disk.
Verify your skill works
After installation, run a small test task that matches the skill purpose. Confirm Claude invokes the workflow, applies the documented checks, and produces output in the expected format.
If the output looks right, the skill is installed correctly. If not, check the folder structure and that the SKILL.md file sits at the root of the skill folder.
Organize your skills library
As your library grows, group skills by discipline — coding, SEO, design, research, automation — so the right skill is easy to find. Keep a short note on what each skill does and when to use it.
A tidy library keeps Claude fast and dependable, because you spend less time hunting for the right workflow.
Troubleshooting installation issues
If a skill does not load, the most common cause is a misplaced SKILL.md file. It must sit at the root of the skill folder, not nested inside a subfolder.
If Claude ignores the skill, confirm compatibility with your version of Claude Code or Claude Desktop, and reinstall from the original download. Premium skills from the marketplace include support if anything goes wrong.
