Design databases with Claude — schema modeling, normalization, indexing, and migration safety in one reusable skill.
Why a database design skill?
Claude for database design works because database mistakes are expensive — a bad schema discovered in production is far harder to fix than a bad function. A database skill encodes the modeling principles, normalization rules, and indexing strategies that prevent these mistakes, applied before a single row is written.
The skill covers the full design process: model entities and relationships, normalize to the right level, plan indexes for expected queries, and write safe migrations. Each step is grounded in how the data will actually be queried, not just how it is stored.
Schema modeling
The skill models entities from your requirements — identifying tables, columns, types, and relationships. It chooses appropriate types, flags nullable columns that should have defaults, and identifies when a relationship should be one-to-many vs many-to-many.
Good schema modeling starts from queries, not entities. The skill asks what you need to read and writes the schema to support those access patterns efficiently.
Normalization and relationships
The skill normalizes to the level your use case requires — typically 3NF for transactional systems, deliberately denormalized for read-heavy analytics. It explains the tradeoff of each decision rather than applying a rule blindly.
Over-normalization kills read performance; under-normalization creates update anomalies. The skill finds the right balance for each table based on its access pattern.
Indexing strategy
Indexes are how databases stay fast at scale. The skill plans indexes based on expected queries — which columns are filtered, which are joined, which are sorted. It flags missing indexes that would cause full-table scans and redundant indexes that waste write performance.
Indexing is the highest-leverage database optimization. The skill applies it proactively, so you do not discover slow queries in production.
Migration safety
Database migrations are where production breaks. The skill writes migrations that are safe to run on a live database — adding columns with defaults, creating indexes concurrently, avoiding destructive operations — and verifies each step before applying it.
